ADVANCED NOISE REDUCTION USING ACTIVE VIBRATION ACTUATORS

Objective

The main results achieved during the project are reported in the following with their ownership.

1. Validation of analysis tools for road noise problem characterization inside the cabin and vibration transmission mechanism (LMS).
2. Realization of a numerical model of a vehicle suspension system (Monroe, Un. of Manchester).
3. Broad band control software for a laboratory 2x2x2 system (KUL).
4. Realization of new inertial actuator based on moving coil work principle (Metzeler).
5. Experimental broad band control for a 6x6x4 system (Elesa).
6. Frequency and time domain simulation code, based on experimental data, in order to predict performances of active control systems with different actuator and feedback sensor configurations (LMS/Patras).
7. Genetic Algorithm based optimization code for the calculation of the optimal vibration actuator configuration (Patras).
8. Time domain simulation code for the performance evaluation of the final control system implemented on the demo-car (KUL).
9. Active vibration system for road noise control (ANRAVA system) (Consortium coordinated by Elesa).

Main conclusions:

- The antivibration control system has been implemented on the demo-car. Better results are achieved with the global feedback instead of local one.
- The laboratory tests have determined a comparable noise reduction at passenger ear of the systems (anti-vibration and anti-noise) using the same references.
- Good reduction (more than 5 dB) have been achieved in the frequency ranges of 75-105 Hz and 250-275 Hz (tire resonance) with limitation of actuator performances in global control scheme.
- Higher reductions have been achieved with the anti-noise system moving the reference sensors to the body car, thanks to an higher multiple coherence.
It is the main objective of the proposed project to develop a system for the active attenuation of the structure borne road noise in car interior by means of creating antivibration waves in the car body to compensate the disturbing vibrations transmitted from the wheels. The proposed work is by no means a duplicate of ongoing active noise control work which is mainly oriented at the reduction of engine noise, but aims to reduce the structure borne road noise by innovative active vibration control techniques on sensitive locations of the vibration energy transmission path between wheels and car interior. This approach is innovative with respect to the state of the art. In order to validate the system, a reference car will be selected and equipped with the developed experimental prototype and the obtained attenuation performance will be measured under normal driving conditions.
