Development of a new approach based on the complex retrospective analysis of existing concrete dams in order to predict their future performance

Objetivo

The project is concerned with the development of a new procedure for the complex analysis of already constructed concrete dams. The main objectives of the proposed project are:
(a) to evaluate the existing stress-strain state of a dam-foundation system by means of retrospective analysis in order to simulate the actual structural behaviour in a realistic fashion;
(b) to predict the future performance of concrete dams, especially of those overstressed during the long-term operations or those being in critical states;
(c) to develop recommendations for the remedial measures in order to ensure their safe operations in future.

The research activities are associated with the development of the complex analysis procedure of concrete gravity dams in order to account for:
(a) fatigue of the dam and foundation materials under static cycling loading corresponding to the operation history of a dam;
(b) elasto-plastic constitutive relationship for dam concrete, foundation rock and interfaces/joints in accordance with the loading history of a dam;
(c) concrete failure criterion adequately reflecting the actual state of a dam by using the adsorption theory of concrete creep and taking the fatigue of concrete into account;
(d) formation and propagation of cracks in concrete and interfaces/joints accounting for the stress degrading effect of cracked concrete;

The implementation of the above-described considerations will result in the development of a new procedure and relevant designer-friendly and easy-to-use computer programme, which will enable designers to evaluate the existing state of a dam, to predict its future performance, to assess risk factors and to define remedial measures for ensuring the safe operation of the structure in future.
