Objectif i3net, the European network for intelligent information interfaces, was launched in 1996 with the goal of advancing the development of novel human-centred systems and interfaces for interacting with information, aimed at people in their everyday activities. To this end, i3net is building the i3 community starting from the approx. 40 Future and Emerging Technologies research projects, which the network supports. i3net has 148 member organisations approx. one third of which are companies. Building upon the joint experiences of the i3 community and the emergent organisation among the Disappearing Computer people and projects, the new network aims to extend its activities to include people and organisations from the entire European Research Area, who are keen t investigate the landscape and visions of future and emerging technologies, looking ahead 20-50 years with focus on design, technology and people. Based in Europe with a European constituency, i3net-seeking impact worldwide, is working by the community for the community. The mission of i3net in the present phase is to maintain continuity of network operations until a proposal for a subsequent phase of the network has been evaluated.i3net the European network for intelligent information interfaces, was launched in 1996 with the goal of advancing the development of novel human-centred systems and interfaces for interacting with information, aimed at people in their everyday activities. Based in Europe with a European constituency, i3net seeking impact worldwide, is working by the community for the community. The mission of i3net in the present phase is to maintain continuity of network operations until a proposal for a subsequent phase of the network has been evaluated.OBJECTIVESThe network aims to: - Empower and simplify ordinary citizens' everyday lives with information technology in the 21st century through leading-edge research efforts;- Enhance social cohesion and inclusiveness, by exploiting technologies which put the individual at the centre of technological change independently of age group, abilities and gender;- Maintain an open global intellectual ambience of workers on contents, form (design, arts), and technology for investigating the landscape and visions of future and emerging technologies, looking ahead 20-50 years;- Establish a network of competences, a multidisciplinary centre of excellence, that can be used at various levels from the strategic looking-far-ahead to the operational short-term one;- Be based iE Europe with a European constituency, collaborating and seeking impact world-wide;- Work by the community for the community, always seeking such mechanisms for collaboration which can release the highest levels of dynamism and creativity.DESCRIPTION OF WORKThe network's task in 2002 will be to maintain: Networking facilities and administration, including: minimal but efficient and proactive network administration; small-centre, de-centralisation, sub-community autonomy, top-down but mostly bottom-up; advanced internal communication infrastructure. Cross-project collaboration, education and human resources, including i3 Spring Days and other workshops, and the annual summer school. External communication of visions and results, including i3magazine, books, 3LabTV on the web, and press releases. Evaluation of linking i3magazine to an international publishing house. Openness and external collaboration, including extension of the community's physical and virtual meeting places to outsiders, evaluation of continued collaboration with COMDEX Europe, evaluation of organising i3 Spring Days adjacent to a major international conference. Tasks are implemented by the following actors:- The coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day running of the network from a small coordinating centre;- The coordinating group (CG) consists of community representatives elected annually. The CG adopts strategies, action plans and budgets, appoints the actors, monitors the actions that have been set in motion, and takes corrective action when needed;- Autonomous sub-communities, such as the DC projects, organise themselves without any powers of the network to interfere in the decisions made but with opportunity for network support when needed;- The members are the existing networkmembers as well as newly elected members;- The friends of i3;- The members-only general assembly (GA) which meets at the annual conference to elect the CG for the coming year, review the network's performance and results during the past year, and discus plans for the following year;- Task groups (TGs) set up by the CG to perform exploration or undertake new actions;- Special interest groups (SIGs) proposed by members to focus on any topic of relevance;- Topical meetings and workshops.
