Objetivo Increasing demands on fuel efficiency have led to weight reduction in cars, made possible by the development of high strength steels. However, there are clear indications that some high strength steel grades could perform badly under fatigue loads. The research proposed is aimed at the safer use of high strength thin sheet steels by the development of a suitable fatigue test, the definition of the relationship between the fatigue and the steel composition, microstructure and related processing conditions and, finally, by the assessment of the effects of various parameters on fatigue strength to enable a transfer from laboratory tests to automotive parts.
