Crash relevant properties & dynamic denting of pre-strained or pre-loaded high strength steels for automotive parts

Objetivo

A major criterion for the choice of material within the car industry today is the behaviour of the material under dynamic loading, i.e. crash. Up to now the dynamic behaviour materials was usually described by strain rate-dependent stress-strain-curves in the as delivered condition neglecting influences of pre- straining caused by forming processes and pre-damages due to in-service loading. Against this background the dynamic material behaviour on crash-relevant components will be examined by means of dynamic tensile tests on pre-strained and pre-loaded specimens, component crash tests and dynamic denting also on pre- loaded components and Finite Element Analysis. The main goal is a comprehensive characterisation of material properties supporting the material designer in designing new steel grades for crash-relevant components as well as the car- designer in optimising lightweight construction.
