Objective In the design of automotive bodies there are many box section sub-assemblies built up from multiple stampings. By replacing stamping assemblies with hydroformed parts made from tubes, and thus eliminating the requirement for weld flanges, considerable reductions in mass can be achieved with improved structural rigidity. The focus of this research project will be on the performance of hydroformed components by developing an understanding of the technical attributes of hydroformed tubes, including weight saving potential and suitable application areas. The results from these studies will enable guidelines to be developed for autobody structural design incorporating hydroformed tubes.
