Objective This proposal aims to develop new and more sensitive techniques in order to understand and quantify the effect: (i) of additional (or residual) elements in steels and (ii) additional reactive gases in the atmosphere during annealing. The project combines in-situ and ex-situ surface characterisations to determine the kinetics of oxygen adsorption, to define the nature and the in-depth distribution of oxide precipitate as well as the development of more realistic models taking into account oxygen adsorption at the surface and the possible formation of mixed oxides. The understanding of the mechanisms controlling selective oxidation and their quantification as a function of process parameters, as also the development of predictive models will be useful to operators to control surface quality by minimising surface defects. The processes particularly concerned by this project are hot dip galvanising, electrogalvanising and all the surface treatment occurring after batch or continuous annealing.
