Cel The precipitation of elements from solid solution is an important factor in determining the microstructure and hence the mechanical properties of modern steels. Precipitation plays a crucial role in HSLA steels, strip steels and heat-treatable steels. In all of these steels, optimisation of both the final mechanical properties and the fabrication path requires a detailed knowledge of the mechanisms and kinetics of precipitation. This project aims to address the understanding of the mechanism of precipitation in two ways: by the development of new and improved methods of precipitation characterisation and by the construction of thermodynamic and kinetic precipitation growth/dissolution models using data obtained from the characterisation of selected micro-alloyed steels.
