Objetivo The aim of this research proposal is to diagnose on-line the possible causes of failures of thickness quality in the products manufactured in hot strip mills. This proposal is oriented towards the installation, completion and improvement of a laboratory prototype developed under the Esprit 8169 project and validated by simulation techniques. The research work will be carried out in several complementary ways: assessment of the laboratory prototype after its integration in the real mill; improvement of the mathematical models and the pattern recognition techniques used in the system, development of a strategy to exploit the information generated by the system for the current automation system of the mill; evaluation of aspects not yet considered.
