Policy and innovation in low tech (pilot) knowledge formation, employment & growth contributions of the "old economy" industries in europe

Objective

The project aims to deepen the understanding of the growing knowledge intensity of economic and social development in Europe. It is assumed that this developmental process is not only dependent on industries with frontline technological knowledge. It is also dominated by so called low- and medium-tech industries. These are not necessarily low-growth industries; many companies and branches within these industries are growing fast, are interlinked with high-tech and service branches and provide an important basis for growth and employment in the future. Since the project will investigate these issues it is necessary to challenge and analyze the concepts of technology and knowledge intensity in industrial as well as in service firms as they are presently understood. It can be assumed that the indicators and underlying hypothesis are not robust.
