New application of soluble silicates in leather production (in order to reduce contamination in tannery effluents)

Objectif

Common curing salt (NaCl) for raw hides and skins will be replaced by alkali silicates in order to preserve them for transport and storage. By this measure, salt contamination in tannery effluents will be reduced to a level, permitting agricultural utilization of these effluents. The application of silicates will require changes in leather technology, whereat a better exhaustion of tannery auxiliaries will be achieved. In addition, ilicate-stabilized pelts (un-haired hides and skins) are likely to serve as a new commodity for European tanneries. In the scientific part, the role of silicates will be investigated. Experiences from this part will lead to adaptations of leather technology, which will result in improved auxiliary exhaustion and reduced effluent contamination.
