Regulation of osmotolerance molecular breeding for improvement of plant drought, salt and cold stress tolerance

Objetivo

Drought, salt and cold are the most important factors limiting plant productivity of southern and northern European lands. Molecular breeding to improve plant stress tolerance is an important target for agro-industrial exploitation. Our objectives are to identify new genes that play a key role in the control of plant stress responses in Arabidopsis and to transfer this knowledge into practical breeding of crop and tree models. We will: 1) Identify key regulatory genes and screen for mutations using forward and reverse genetics. 2) Define the role of osmoprotective proteins by using biochemical and transgenic approaches. 3) Validate the use of regulatory genes in resistance breeding programmes to improve stress tolerance in tomato and poplar.
