CONCERTED ACTION LONG-TERM CREEP DATA DEVELOPMENT FOR ADVANCED POWER AND PROCESS PLANT MATERIALS

Objetivo

Creep and rupture strength values for a large number of materials used in high temperature plant have been agreed by European industry and recommended to/incorporated in European Standards.
Procedures for vetting large sets of data have been developed and validated based on the new and original concept of PATs (Post Assessment Tests).
A system has been set up for the co-ordinated supply of data.
Procedures for harmonisation of data production, assessment and utilisation (for existing and future plant requirements) have been developed in detail.
Optimum data exchange and analysis methods have been developed and validated.
New data have been/are being generated on new materials (such as Grade 91 steel) through Europe wide co-operation between industry.
Information dissemination throughout Europe has been highly effective.
Key future data developments areas have been identified resulting in two new Thematic Network proposals.
Two new areas requiring the formulation of new standards/codes of practice have been identified. These are 'interrupted creep testing' and 'stress relaxation testing'.
Long-term creep data are fundamental to the improved design of future conventional and advanced power and process plant and for the safe, efficient and reliable operation of existing plant beyond its original design life. There are currently a number of creep data development activities, which address a commonality of plant materials throughout Europe. The goal of the present work is to co-ordinate and integrate creep data development for advanced high temperature power and process plant design on an Europe-wide basis.

The key aspects of the work are first, the formation of an interactive group involving representatives (industry, technical institutes and universities) from creep data development activities in Europe. Second, organisation of a series of meetings involving a management board and technical panels. Third, setting-up of a technology transfer forum to promote dissemination of information and exploitation of the results of the Action throughout Europe. The work will address aspects including future data development areas, procedures for ensuring that date meet specific quality levels (thereby significantly increasing their value added), co-ordination of supply of data for the development of European databases and European standards, harmonisation of standards for the production, assessment and utilisation of data, standardised European data exchange methods and innovative integrated approaches addressing the whole plant life cycle.

The overall result of this Concerted Action is expected to be an approx. 25% decrease in European creep data development costs.
