Seeking synergy between urban growth, horticulture and the environment in asian metropoles

Objective

This project aims to design solutions to the problems arising from the interactions between urban growth and changing horticultural production systems on the outskirts of the rapidly growing Asian cities of Hanoi and Naming. The dynamics and tradeoffs between urban and agricultural uses will be analysed using economic, social and environmental criteria. Changing horticultural livelihood strategies will be assessed and technical and economic constraints and opportunities for the production of organic/safe vegetables will be identified. Stakeholder platforms will be established as a basis for developing scenarios concerning urban-urban land use planning. The platforms, comprising policy makers, government institutions, enterprises, farmers and others will develop and endorse action plans based on the analysis of the scenarios.
