Network to review natural analogue studies and their applications to repository safety assessment and public communication

Objective

The aim of this project is to promote a more considered use of natural analogues in safety assessment and public communication. This will be achieved by a critical review of traditional analogue studies, such as investigations of radionuclide transport around uranium ore bodies and analogues of processes such as glass degradation. Scoping consideration will also be given to other types of natural system studies, which adopt a similar philosophy to analogues, such as studies of the geosphere-biosphere interface. Previous uses of analogues in performance assessment will also be critically assessed in light of present day requirements for safety cases supported by multiple lines of reasoning. This review of the state-of-the-art will lead to the construction of a coherent set of recommendations for future analogue applications presented in a series of concise project reports, supported by a searchable database of analogue information.

The aim of this project is to promote a more considered use and understanding of natural analogues in safety assessment and public communication.

Component objectives are:
1. critically to review a wide range of natural analogue studies and their past applications to safety assessment;
2. to develop recommendations for how natural analogues may be most sensibly applied to future safety cases and for stakeholder communication;
3. to identify 'quality assured' analogue information which the project considers to be most useful and relevant to safety cases and to compile this information in a simple database format to make it accessible to all stakeholders and;
4.to identify and prioritise areas where further analogue studies may be warranted.
