Urban sustainable transportation systems

Obiettivo

Much has been studied and written about factors that influence travel behavior and traffic in cities. However, previous research has failed to consider the impact on a city' s traffic when it experiences rapid and extensive changes in the size and structure of its population. Many of today' s European regions are facing such changes. Thus, this study focuses on the impact of demographic changes on travel behavior and traffic in cities. Populations and places change, and as they do the amount and mode of city traffic generated changes accordingly. "City traffic" is defined as the daily demand by all of a city's inhabitants for travel between two or more points. It is widely recognized that this demand is not constant over time. It is also true that different segments of the population make different sorts of trip. For example, a 10-year-old boy does not have the same transit modes available to him as does his mother. She may drive more often, while he rides a bicycle to his favorite destinations. Previous studies have identified many of these age specific travel behaviours^1. This study builds on these previous findings by considering age specific travel behavior In the context of the entire demographic profile. It describes how changes in the demographic profile will impact city traffic. In other words, city traffic is the cumulative result of all the age groups' specific travel behaviors. When the size and proportion of the different age groups changes, so does the city's traffic. The size and structure of a population depends on factors such as migration, mortality and births. These factors are, in turn, influenced by elements such as culture and the economy. For planners and politicians interested in guiding future traffic developments, it is important to consider how these factors will influence the demographic profile, and then apply those results to models for predicting future traffic. This study offers such model scenarios by incorporating t
