Objectif It is essential to achieve greater uniformity in the reheating of semi-finished products (slabs, blooms and billets) if the quality of rolled products is to be improved and their cost reduced. The proposed research covers the following four aspects: - identification of the phenomena and influencing parameters by carrying out measurements on Solmer's No 3 furnace at Fos-sur-Mer; - aerodynamic visualization in cold conditions using a 1:15 scale model and tests on corrective measures in the form of either modifications or readjustments; - development of a two-dimensional thermal model for quantifying the irregularities and the effect of the proposed corrective measures; - testing on the industrial furnace of one of the proposed improvements. The aim of the research proposed by IRSID is to study and provide design remedies for heating irregularities in slab furnaces fitted chiefly with roof and front burners.
