Continuous casting at sub-liquidus temperature

Objective

Dendritic solidification, centre line porosity and segregation may be minimised by reducing the casting superheat. One approach is that of sub-liquidus or slurry casting. BSC Teeside Laboratories have demonstrated on a pilot scale the feasibility of extracting heat by a heat exchanger intermediate between the concast tundish and the mould whilst maintaining fluidity by generating shear forces in the liquid-solid aggregate. The present proposal has the object of developing a slurry generator suitable for the casting of billets and blooms at the pilot plant level. The proposal is complementary to CRM (P2020), having similar objectives, but adopting a different approach as regards the slurry generator design.
