Objetivo Separate macro-inclusions in continuously cast special steel billets should be reduced in number by filtering the steel melt with ceramic filters. Suitable filters are to be developed in conjunction with the manufacturers and tested for their service behaviour and their filtering properties. The filters will be built into the distributor of a six-strand continuous caster for special steel billets. Filtered and unfiltered steams of operationally cast, microscopically clean special steel melts will be compared for their contents of undesired macro-inclusions. The filters will be examined for changes in the filter material and filter construction and the separated phases. If this project succeeds, the rejection risk in the continuous casting of special steel will be reduced and the number of types of steel suitable for continuous casting increased.
