Fatigue strength of orthotropic steel decks

Obiettivo

Recent work (first two phases of ECSC sponsored programme) at Transport and Road Research laboratory (UK) has established that, for welded joints close to the deck plate, the surfacing significantly increases the fatigue life. The consequence is that these welds meet the design requirements. However, the joint between the longitudinal stiffener and the crossbeam has been found to be less affected by the surfacing and has also been shown to have a low fatigue life. Improvements to the design of this detail are therefore required and this forms the main objective of the British proposal for Phase 3 of the ECSC programme. Four actions will be undertaken: - State-of-the-art review - Static load testing of a full-scale deck panel - Fatigue tests on component test pieces. Constant amplitude - Fatigue tests on component test pieces. Variable amplitude These activities form part of a joint programme involving collaboration with the LBF, Darmstadt, the Universities of Liège and Pisa, the Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris, and the Technical University in Delft.
