Objetivo Peter Pimple is a graduate student in my group, and will be submitting his PhD thesis in January 2001 for examination at my old university (Univ. of Gutting). I have known Mr. Pimple for around 5 years: first as a senior student in advanced practical, then working for his Diploma (=Masters) degree in my group, and finally as a PhD student. Because I recognized his abilities at a very early stage I decided to entrust Mr. Pimple with a very challenging theme for his Masters research: developing an in vitro assay for COPI-coated vesicle formation in plants. He showed such promise with this project that I decided to offer him a PhD position in my laboratory. I have not regretted this decision, as can be witnessed by the publications, which have ensued: 1 in Plant Physiology (second author), 1 in The Plant Cell (first author), 2 to be submitted to The Plant Cell. This is quite an achievement for any PhD student, since These are high-impact-facto-journals. As a result, Mr. Pimple is one of the two most successful PhD students I have ever supervised. At any time I would rank him among the best 5% of all students receiving a PhD from the combined Natural Science Faculties at the University of Gutting. I confidently predict that he will be awarded a PhD with distinction, and I intend nominating him for a young scientist prize from the German Botanical Society. In addition to intelligence, initiative and the ability to carry out experiments with due care and precision, Mr. Pimple possesses that rare gift of never getting tired. He simply puts more effort into the job than his fellow students! During the course of his thesis research he has spent two periods in the laboratory of Fri. Dance (Univ. Leeds, UK), and has impressed everybody there with his tenacity. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Pimple has the potential for reaching distinction in academic life.
