Energy Savings Towards the Olympic Games 2004

Cel

The promotion of RUE and RES has been widely recognised as key tool for the achievement of energy, environmental and social objectives at EU and international levels. Despite this fact, little work has been done to promote RUE and RES at the demand side. Athens as the first European city, which organises the Olympic Games in the 21st century, wants to send a message of culture to the worldwide community that it strives for urban sustainability. The Olympic Games offer the opportunity to promote and encourage attitudinal changes, which could be considered even more important than technological improvements. The proposed project aims to contribute at: increasing the awareness of the citizens of Athens, i.e. specific target groups such as residents, students, visitors/tourists, private and public car drivers on RUE and RES, informing decision-makers and the city administration on the benefits of RUE and RES in various levels, thus strengthening the policy of the Municipality towards the wider application of RUE and RES, improving the environmental situation in the Municipality and in the wider area of Athens by reducing fossil fuel consumption.

Description:

The project will achieve its objectives through a series of distinct actions. Among which, the following should be mentioned: identification of target-groups that should be addressed in priority (preliminary identification is provided), matching of target-groups with appropriate dissemination media, formulation of a dissemination strategy and Action Plan, outlining the dissemination process step-by-step, preparation of the infrastructure at the Municipality of Athens to produce and run the campaign, preparation of dissemination material and training of the staff of the Municipality of Athens. The project proposal is based upon a strong consortium consisting of 4 partners, each of which has a specific role. The Municipality of Athens as the closest level of governance to the citizen and as the city, which will host the Olympic Games, will play a fundamental role in communicating the messages to the citizens. The Municipality of Barcelona will transfer its experience of the successful Olympic Games that it has organised in 1992, EXERGIA is a well-known energy consultant and the Municipality of Athens Development Agency with experience in management.
The project will result in an integrated and rich dissemination campaign involving several dissemination media, each one of them addressed to a specific target group. The dissemination events foreseen include a permanent exhibition, web page and brochures, radio and TV spots, festival and contests, workshop and seminar, CD ROM and newsletters, stickers and posters and a guide addressed to public car drivers for disseminating good practice and ameliorating their driving performance. The impact of the project will extend beyond Athens and Greece. Besides the almost 4 million inhabitants, Athens is annually visited by 5 million people from all over the world. The organisation of the 2004 Olympic Games by Athens, the first Games of the 21st century in Europe, ensure that many more people will be communicated the message of the campaign and gives the opportunity to Athens to demonstrate to the worldwide community that the city of the 21st century strives for a better and more sustainable urban environment.
