Adoption and enhancement of open frameworks for converged Audio/Video/TV provision for the home user

Cel

A/VPack Trial project aims at the adoption and acquisition of technology and expertise in open standards and frameworks for delivery and management of voice and video based services to the end-user. The project first, will adopt and enhance an emerging Video delivery architecture and content handling framework proposed by the DVB forum (MHP) and will combine it with the emerging TASTE framework for time-shifted TV and second, the prevailing Packet Voice protocol (H.323 Voice over IP and Call Handler). The developments will be integrated in an existing system (based on Linux) and evaluated in a rich testbed. The target is to formulate a fully converged Audio/Video delivery platform for residential entertainment. The main proposer business sector is the offering of multifunctional gateway systems.

OBJECTIVES
In this project the user and the technology suppliers will cooperate for the adaptation of emerging service frameworks for voice and video based service offering. The frameworks will be integrated over a multifunctional residential gateway of subcontractor In Access. The project:
1) will adopt and enhance an emerging open Video delivery architecture and content handling framework proposed by the DVB forum (MHP);
2) will combine it with the emerging digital video recording and;
3) will adopt the prevailing Packet Voice protocol (H.323 Voice over IP and Call Handler). The target is to formulate a fully converged Audio/Video delivery platform specifically for residential entertainment devices (also called Video Gateways).

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The technical context and main objectives of the project are:
1) port TASTE, the Tuxia (Techno Trend's subsidiary) embedded Linux, to the gateway platform;
2) to adopt, enhance and port MHP framework for video delivery over the existing gateway platform;
3) to port and enhance the Call Handler and Packet Voice stack on the gateway platform;
4) integrate an embedded JVM into TASTE;
5) to integrate both platforms with the OSGI (and JAVA) framework that offers resilience, security and privacy;
6) to integrate example services (packet telephony, PVR and interactive TV using a commercial video server) validate the product offering in a real testbed provided by the local public telephone operator, and;
7) to explore the requirements for upgrading the platform with other related technologies, and namely with: MHP-PVR interface, SIP for Packet Voice. The foreseen enhancements include reduction of memory footprint of both frameworks so as to fit in embedded systems (e.g. reduce the Call Handler/ VoIP footprint at about 6-7 Mbytes), efficient integration with the OSGI compatible RG platform. The project will focus on the quality of service, broadband data streams control, real time performance, minimum jitter and delay as well as on system reliability.
