Mixed air steam turbines fired by liquid fuels (MAST B LIQUID)

Objectif

The proposal will provide design guidelines for liquid/dual - fuelled gas turbine combustion chambers in open system mixed air-steam turbines (MAST) leading to efficiencies above 50 and reduced NOx emissions. The project will extend two novel optical sensors for measurement of fuel/flame location in liquid fuelled combustors during sector/engine stand tests, by combined experiments and calculations of excited chemiluminescent radicals. The measurements provided by these sensors will evaluate new Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models for (1) evaporation of multi-component fuels in high humidity environments; (2) turbulent partially premixed non-adiabatic liquid-fuel vapour flames for CO/NOx reaction chemistry and mean chemical reaction rate. These CFD tools will allow a parametric study of combustion behaviour and wall temperature of LIQUID MAST combustion chambers linked with a socio-economic assessment provided by a NAS partner.
