Objetivo The project will develop rapid and efficient methods to detect the presence of contaminating human enteric pathogenic viruses in soft fi"uit. The methods will be based on differerential centrifugation for extraction of virus particles, cell culture for detection of infectious virus, and molecular detection for viruses such as Norwalk-like viruses which as yet cannot be cultured. The methods will be used to determine how long viruses can remain infectious in soft fruit, both fresh and frozen. The effect of commonly used sensitisation methods, such as chlorination, on viruses contaminating soft fruit will also be evaluated.
