Assessment and improvement of analytical methods required for the implementation of EU policies in the field of food/feed safety and quality.

Ziel

Specific Objectives:
1. Provide measurement values for Se species in yeast and cereals to contribute to the SEAS project (speciated CRMs). Set of results in Se speciation in yeast and cereals: progress report by June 2003;
2. Complete the validation through peer-review collaborative trial of the method for the determination of hair dyes in cosmetic formulations. Final report for validation by June 2003;
3. Install the new nanoLC-Q-TOF-MS instrumentation, when the instrument is delivered Anticipated milestones and schedule
Planned Deliverables:
1.progress report on Se speciation in yeast and cereals - June 2003;
2. report on validation of hair dyes in cosmetic formulations - June 2003;
3. installation of nanoLC-Q-TOF-MS instrumentation.
Summary of the Action:
Present and future activities of this action range from the development and validation of analytical methods to the support to the production of reference materials (BCR CRM programme for certification of new CRMs and re-certification of exhausted CRMs). This action addresses several important issues for food safety and quality, such as antibiotics, proteins, hormones, trace elements and their species, and radionuclides. Taking into consideration the complexity of the analytical problems related to these topics, the development and validation of performant analytical methods based on hyphenated techniques will increase using eg. LC-MS/MS, LC-QTOF, LC- electrochemical detection, CE-MSn. It is important to stress that there must be a great deal of flexibility in the Work Plan in order to be able to react to urgent requests of customers and the production schemes for CRMs, which are often controlled by outside institutions. These objectives will contribute to the creation of expert networks with laboratories of the Member and Candidate Countries, particularly with the Community Reference Laboratories (CRL). Several networks already exist in which the action takes part. In this topic, training for young scientists at post-doctoral level is another important aspect. Rationale Quality of food products and drinking water has become a major concern of legislators and producers in the EU in view of protecting consumers. Hence, the control of the origin and quality of agri-food request the development of more reference analytical methods and certified reference materials to enforce the relevant Commission policies. In addition, new enhanced methods are often necessary in order to implement new or now more stringent Directives (e.g. radiopollutant levels in Drinking Water Directive).
