Biogas production from biomass in the solid state for increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources.

Cel

In Europe, the generation of energy from biomass is an area with considerable hitherto unused potential which could be applied, in particular, to the production of biogas for fuelling gas turbines in CHP plants or for driving fuel cells. Available kinds of biomass include residual wastes, household wastes of organic origin, wastes from the food industry, garden and hoticultural wastes, material harvested from areas left fallow, and also animal manure. (Waste of only 10% of the EU population, would give rise to an energy potential of 7400 GWh or harvested materials of the areas left fallow within the EU would give rise to an energy potential of 85600 GWh.) At the present time these materials are treated without generation of energy. An alternative procedure which combines aerobic and anaerobic processing to generate biogas from biomass in the solid state (water content 20-70%) could avoid disadvantages of other treatment processes. This project should develop this laternative process for the efficient production of biogas from biomass in the solid state and to render it mature enough for series production.
