Objective

ROMANTIK will develop and evaluate "structured" and "ad-hoc" multi-hop radio networks as well as intelligent relaying techniques for 3G+ and 4G mobile/wireless communication systems. As link layer performance enhancement will increase the practicality of multi-hop radio networks, ROMANTIK also aims to develop and evaluate two innovative link layer technologies: CDMA with Cyclic Prefix Extension (CDMA-CPE) and Channel Prediction Enhanced Adaptive Modulation (CPEAM), including the benefits of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques. Such advanced radio link techniques will complement and enhance the benefits derived from multihop radio networks and intelligent relaying techniques in 3G+ and 4G systems.

OBJECTIVES
ROMANTIK will to develop and evaluate "structured" and "ad-hoc" multi-hop radio networks as well as intelligent relaying techniques for 3G+ and 4G mobile/wireless communication systems. Within this primary objective, specific objectives are the development of:
- radio resource management algorithms,
- strategies for intelligent relaying,
- innovative radio link techniques such as CDMA with Cyclic Prefix Extension (CDMA-CPE),called to greatly simplify Multiuser Detection (MUD) processing and such as Channel Prediction Enhanced Adaptive Modulation (CPEAM) technique to achieve time diversity within the transmitted symbol by extending the symbol duration beyond the channel coherence time.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project is composed of 5 technical Work Packages (WP), of WP1, the Project management WP, and by the exploitation WP7 covering the information flow among WPs and the market. Also the socio-economic aspects of the ROMANTIK are considered. Starting with WP2, the project concerns with scenarios and requirement definition for multihop networks and for two novel radio interfaces, CDMA with Cyclix Prefix Extension and Adaptive Modulation, employing Multiple Input Multiple Output arrays (MIMO) at the terminals. WP3 is aimed to synthesise multi-hop network architectures evaluating the structured multihop networks and their benefits in terms of spectrum efficiency for supporting the bursty packet bearers in a dense capacity-hungry wireless user environment. In WP4 two new radio interfaces enhancing multihop networks are studied, multi-access techniques are compared, and validation is carried out trough link and system level simulation; WP5 evaluates a structured multihop networks, while WP6 evaluates the impact on UMTS standard and quantifies the terminal and infrastructure cost and complexity versus performance. Finally, in WP7 effective communication of the technical achievements of the project will be provided to the outside world by dissemination and exploitation of results.
