Objective The present study aims to investigate whether the reported positive relationship between the distribution and abundance also occurs in palm communities. There already exist data from Peruvian and Ecuadorian Amazonian, and by combining the datasets, it is possible to study the distribution patterns at wide geographical scale. Another aim of the study is to compare the similarity of palm communities between study sites - The species lists from different study areas can be used to estimate the extent to which beta diversity affects the total number of the species in a larger region . An indirect way to consider the possible role of beta diversity is to look at the physical environment in order to evaluate how much potential habitat variability there is. One indicator for the physical environment can be for instance, seraphic conditions of each study areas. The existing palm and soil data from Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazonian enable these comparisons, and provide very good possibilities to estimate the role of beta diversity at larger spatial scale. Thirdly, by studying the distribution and densities of useful palm species in different areas, this study will provide new information on the availability of palm resources. This type of information is crucial when evaluating potential of different areas to produce economically and ecologically sustainable products.
