Research and development of Novel-Cable-In- Conduit Conductors (N-CICC) for use in the fast ramping (4 T/s ) SIS-100 dipoles of the new GSI International Accelerator Facility for Beams of Ions and Antiprotons

Objetivo

The SIS-100 accelerator needs a fast magnetic field ramp rate ~4 T/s at 2 T level and must survive many millions of cycles. Only a specially designed super conducting magnet can achieve this task. Some traditional solutions were considered, but a novel design, using cable-in-conduit conductor technology, was chosen as the strongest candidate to achieve this aim.

The project's goal is the research and development required to adapt this novel CICC (N-CICC) superconductor for use in SIS-100 magnets.
The proposed project should provide the answers to the most important questions associated with a proper choice of conductor parameters for this novel cable-in-conduit conductor for the SIS-100 magnets, given the restraints of a short development time and low budget. It will provide a verification of the super conducting strand and cable design, an evaluation of advantages as well as drawbacks of the N-CICC design for use in SIS-100 magnets, and a reasonable conductor cost estimate.

The teams involved in the project have all the necessary experience, equipment, and infrastructure to complete this work.
