Medical remote monitoring of clothes (MERMOTH)

Ziel

The continuous remote monitoring of some vital signals from patients is a new health care concept: itis technology-driven since the advances in sensor technology, communication technology, dataprocessing allow thinking about suits that would imbed seamless ly such technologies to make theremote sensing systems wearable. It is socially-driven because of the rising costs of medicalassistance, the need to improve early illness detection and medical interventions, the human lifetimeaverage value which is steadil y increasing. A consortium of European SMEs involving a company incharge of clinical trials -ADDS-, two textile manufacturers- ELASTA et Fernand Dubois- and fourhardware and software developers- ISO, SOFTSWITCH, NETSMART, NETVITA- in the field of bioclothe s require a Textile Research Institute (CENTEXBEL) to coordinate and manage a developmentproject involving two SME RTD performers -TAM TELESANTE and NMRC- specialised intelemedicine technologies and bio cloths. They aim at providing the clinical study mark ets andacademic laboratories with instrumented clothes that can monitor patient's health. In that researchproject, the design of the fabric is one of the most critical issues, since it could be manufactured as awoven, a crochet or a knitted product. Since comfort is an important parameter, the design of thefabric needs to be optimized: the use of a fully-fashion technology on a knitting machine appears keyfor the positioning of the sensors and the actuators within the final product. The main output ofMERMOT H is a comfortable, wearable monitoring prototype unit, based on a "wearable interface" : itis implemented by integrating smart sensors, advanced signal processing techniques and newtelecommunication systems on a textile platform. A parallel data managemen t provides the first twomarkets with a whole prototype unit for extensive testing.'
