Chrysophycean cysts from europe as a tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction (CREATE)

Objectif

The first objective is to develop an air-temperature transfer function, based on chrysophycean cysts, to be applied in different lake ecosystems throughout Europe. The second is to validate the developed transfer function using high resolution 210Pb sediment records and compare the reconstructed temperatures with the instrumental record. To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to build on the cyst calibration data-set, that is already available for the Pyrenees (105 lakes), specifically by adding new lakes that increase the dissolved organic carbon and temperature ranges of the data-set. These conditions can be covered adding lakes from Scotland and Norway (90 lakes). Test sediment cores will be taken from Norway and Scotland and dated by 210Pb methods. The air temperature reconstruction will be validated by comparing the results from sediment analyses with the available instrumental climate record. In particular an attempt will be made to identify cyst signals associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation in the recent record, and propagate backwards in time the signal of the NAO. The most innovative aspect is the development of a powerful new tool for reconstruction of continental air temperatures. It is particularly relevant to problems of climate variability over the Holocene, and would be especially valuable for application to sites in north-west Europe that are strongly influenced by Atlantic Ocean pressure and sea-surface temperature variability.
