Gas-phase reactions of nitrate radicals with phenols

Objectif

Phenols are produced in the atmosphere from the oxidation of aromatic compounds. They are highly reactive under atmospheric conditions and can therefore contribute to urban air pollution. The degradation of phenols in the troposphere is mainly initiated by hydroxyl radicals during the day and nitrate radicals at night. In order to ascertain the true environmental impact of phenols a thorough knowledge of the rates and mechanisms for their atmospheric degradation is required. This project has two main research objectives:
(i) to determine rate coefficients for the reaction of nitrate radicals with a series of methylphenols and dimethylphenols.
(ii) to identify and quantify the major oxidation products of the nitrate radical initiated oxidation of methyl- and dimethylphenols. Laboratory studies will be performed in a new environmental (smog) chamber designed for the studyof gas-phase processes under atmospheric conditions. Chemical analysis of reactant/product mixtures will be provided by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and GC-MS. Chemical mechanisms for the nitrate radical initiated oxidation of phenols will be constructed. The mechanisms will be made available to collaborating laboratories within Europe for inclusion in photochemical models that are used to predict secondary pollutant formation. It is envisaged that the inclusion of this chemistry will improve the accuracy of such predictions and lead to an improved understanding of the environmental impact of phenols.
