Obiettivo Within the EU, products are transported on wooden pallets, which are designed to be reusable. During use the pallet can become damaged and this damage can be difficult to detect, particularly if it is a hairline crack in a board. Using damaged pallets can cause accidents as they can collapse under load, so the objective is to significantly improve handling safety and avoid these accidents. The objective is to be achieved by the development of an intelligent self-inspecting pallet, which by using simple sensors will determine when part of the pallet is either damaged or overloaded and pass this information to an operator via a simple communication system. The results will be the testing of intelligent pallets in a production environment in conjunction with manufacturing and repair strategies for integrating sensors into pallets. The social objectives are to propose new standards for the use of pallets, preserve natural resources and create jobs in R &D and pallet repair centres.
