Objetivo Aluminium is a lightweight, strong and durable construction material applied in the automotive, transport, building and packaging sectors. The number of applications of aluminium is increasing due to its inherent advantages compared to steel. In order to exploit the challenges available in the growing market for aluminium products speed and productivity for the joining processes should be increased. The existing arc welding techniques have reached their technical, physical and economical limitations in terms of speed. Faster welding asks for high investments and is time consuming. Developing a combination of these two technologies into a hybrid welding technology could double current productivity and reduce joining costs by 35%. Specific research objectives are: improvement in travel speed and deposition rate by 50-100%, a reduction of rejected components by 70% and an increased joint strength by 20%. Main deliverable for SME-proposers is a pilot scale hybrid-welding machine.
