Objetivo
Food supplements based of the bee products royal jelly, propels (bee glue) and bee pollen are widely used in European countries because of their expected healthy effects to humans. Propels and royal jelly are also often used in pharmaceuticals. However, trading of these bee products within the EU is difficult since there are no clear regulations if they are regarded as ordinary food supplements or as drugs or part of them. In some countries they are not classified. In addition, major health irritations have been reported after consumption of royal jelly. It is the goal of the intended project to clear the effects of these bee products on human health. Hence, the major task will be to determine the quality and quantity of the most important ingredients as well as the amount of pollutants (e.g. heavy metals) of royal jelly and propels of different origin and to perform toxicological studies. The results of this project should lead to a clear definition of the products and lead to the conclusion if theses bee products belong to foodstuff and food supplements or if their pharmaceutical and toxicological character is more dominant.
