Obiettivo Foot-and- mouth disease is one of the most important diseases of livestock from veterinary as well economic point of view, and outbreaks still occur at the European borders. Additionally, not all potential new members are free of FMD, which increases the risk of new outbreaks. During an outbreak emergency vaccination will be applied. However, vaccination does not prevent infection and the risk of persistently infected animals. Because of this risk, vaccination leads to trade restrictions with enormous economic consequences. During this workshop, experts, potential new members of the EU and FMDV officials will exchange knowledge about persistence of FMDV and discuss the problem of carrier animals. Conclusions will be drawn and outlines for new research proposals will be made. Results will be offered for publication to veterinary Quarterly.
