Mite cultivation plant

Objetivo

House dust mites - which are widely present in beds, carpets, etc - has become one of the major causes of allergy and asthma. Mite-allergyvaccins have been developed in the past, making use of the proteins of house dust mite itselves. Currently, these proteins are difficult to produce in a non-consistent, standardized way, since mites are grown on material from human or animal origin, which is susceptible to variations. Moreover, the mites could transfer viruses or prisons from this human/animal material, which brings the risk of contaminating the vaccins. This project is set up to research, develop, design, manufacture and test a prototype of a standardized production method for the cultivation of house dust mites on an industry-scale, that makes use of a nutrient from a non-human, non-animal origin. The method leads to more quality-consistent, safer and cheaper mite-allergy vaccines than the existing method.
