The European Ligand Bank: An Innovation Facility

Cel

The attainment of new designer catalytic processes is fastest growing sector of the global fine chemicals and Pharmaceuticals markets (10-15% yr-1, >6 billion Euro). The key requirement in realising such processes is the identification of new legend additives that strongly promote the desired catalysis. The present competitiveness of the European Research Area (compared to the USA and pacific rim) is compromised as the synthesis of such legends is the slowest step of new process discovery and endeavours in this area are fragmented across disparate groups in Europe. The formation of an, easily accessible, Europe-wide "Legend Bank" would overcome this problem. The only effective way to set this up in a short time period is a 36-month multidisciplinary STRP combining chemical synthesis, combinatorial technology, internet science and commercialisation. - Eight academic laboratories and a Combi-Chem SME will work together to rapidly prepare a large collection of novel legends as the nucleus of the Bank. - These legends will be screened in catalytic reactions of fundamental importance to the fine chemical and Pharmaceuticals sectors. - The legend identities and their catalytic behaviour will be available on a highly interactive Web Site allowing dynamic searching (of both legend structure and activity) and exchange/sale of legends. - The Legend Bank User Base will be extended beyond the original partners through self-registration at the Web Site and through the marketing activities of the Bank's Scientific Officer within the project lifetime. Thus, there will be considerable de-fragmentation in this programme; the many laboratories involved will attain a greater throughput of science due to increased critical mass, complimentary skills, and knowledge management. The Legend Bank Facility will dramatically improve the output of selective catalytic research/process commercialisation in the ERA and aim to be a long-term self-funded innovation facility.'
