Objective

Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics carries out high level research, as it was recognized by the title Centre of Excellence in the frame of the 5th Framework Programme. Our institute has especially old traditions in research of finite combinatorial structures. These research results and techniques are applied more and more widely in other areas, like number theory, group theory, or more generally abstract algebra and geometry. Though we have a solid background in combinatorics, still we have some areas where our competence should be developed. These areas are mostly, but not exclusively on the borderline of algebra and combinatorics. Transfer of knowledge is needed in these subjects to make Hungary and Europe competitive with the strong centres of the US in these fields too. The main objective of this proposal is to use the great scientific capacity of the discrete mathematics group of our highly evaluated institute in a more effective way, to integrate it into the network of the developed European discrete mathematical centres. For this purpose, we need financial support to host European experts of mathematics in the relevant subjects. If a discrete mathematics centre wants to live up to the information society's expectations, then it must develop many diverse subjects related to finite structures and have to integrate to big discrete mathematics networks and to establish a common knowledge. The main expected impact of this project is a few steps on this road. Furthermore, the project prospectively broadens the expertise of our team, increases our reputation in the mathematical community and helps us to keep our talented young researchers in the country.
