Early Stage Research Training on Biomimetic Systems

Objetivo

The Early Stage Research Training Network proposed here addresses the pressing need for multidisciplinary training programmes, which enable graduate students and young scientists to pursue interdisciplinary research projects. This proposal is about the new research field of Biomimetic Systems which is at the borderline of physics, chemistry, biology, and materials research, and which has a very high potential for future applications in bioengineering, pharmacology, and biomedicine. Biomimetic Systems are model systems in the nano- and micro-regime, which mimic or imitate certain aspects of the complex self-organisation in biological systems. Research on Biomimetic Systems combines experimental and theoretical strategies such as: synthesis of biomimetic nanostructures; construction of experimental model systems; experimental characterisation; manipulation of nanostructures; external perturbations and structural transformations; construction and analysis of theoretical models; computer simulations and molecular modelling; identification of basic mechanisms and general principles.

In order to prepare graduate students and young scientists for such interdisciplinary research, we need a new culture of multidisciplinary training programmes which complement the traditional university education. The EST activity proposed here provides such a programme, which integrates the knowledge bases of physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. This EST should also be effective in order to attract excellent students from all around the world and to counter the brain drain towards the US. In this way, Europe will become the international leader in the training of students and young researchers for this timely and fast growing research field. The EST activity proposed here extends the "International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Biomimetic Systems" to the European level and integrates training activities at the IMPRS (Potsdam, Germany).
