Training in Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Techniques, Hardware and Applications

Objectif

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique for imaging the human body, which has revolutionised the field of diagnostic medicine. Future advances in "digital medicine" will rely strongly on the realisation of the huge potential that MRI has in this area. Many of the fundamental developments in the history of MRI have originated from the work of European-based research groups, with the achievements of the research group in Nottingham led by Nobel laureate Professor Sir Peter Mansfield at the forefront. European companies currently play a dominating role in the worldwide market for MR technology. However, the recent recruitment difficulties faced by industry and academia provide clear evidence that there is a strong need within the ERA for MRI scientists to maintain Europe's leading position in this area and to ensure that the technology is applied to improving the health and well-being of European citizens.

The Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre in Nottingham, which is one of the premier sites for MRI research within the ERA, houses a unique range of equipment and offers an ideal interdisciplinary research environment for the training of young MRI scientists. This EST proposal outlines a detailed training programme for European researchers with the aim of providing a comprehensive education in MRI technology, to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and to offer access to a range of state-of-the-art instruments. Projects of 36 months duration will be tailored to physics graduates leading to the award of a Ph.D. in magnetic resonance physics. Shorter projects will be directed towards EST researchers who are already enrolled in a Ph.D. programme at another European institution. Ten members of academic staff will be responsible for delivering the training in the core discipline and associate supervisors from cross-disciplines will ensure the multi-disciplinary character of the training.
