Objective The original feature of the project is the very low height of the continuous casting machine, which can result in investment costs being reduced to only approximately 40% of those in a conventional continuous caster. The total height of the machine is only 3.5 m (the height to the lower edge of the tundish being only 5 m). Further special features of the machine are: - the mould, with a radius of 12 m and a median axis at an angle of 37° to the shop floor; - a curved submerged nozzle; - the special oscillation device; - the special device for electromagnetic stirring. The following metallurgical problems will be investigated and, it is hoped, solved: - bulging, - control of solidification, - the effect of electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling range on the formation of inclusions. A particular problem connected with the plant and requiring solution is the conicity of the mould. It is intended to cast blooms of the following dimensions: 320 x 350 mm and 220 x 220 mm.
