Digital Adaptive Filter Design Based on the Fast Affine Projection Algorithm and the Logarithmic Number System Arithmetic

Cel

The aim of the project is to study the design of a digital adaptive filter at algorithmic level and its efficient implementation in an FPGA device. The use of the Fast Affined Projection (FAP) adaptive algorithm proposed in this project represents a qualitative leap in digital filter design.
A class of the FAP algorithms outperforms the classical Least Mean Square (LMS) approach used in commercial devices for digital filtering with many parameters and fast adaptation, without substantial increase of complexity. The thorough investigation and analysis of the FAP will provide a sound theoretical background in order to design an efficient FPGA hardware implementation. A successful implementation of the fast and robust digital adaptive filter requires the use of inappropriate floating-point like arithmetic suitable furan FPGA device. The application of the Logarithmic Number System (LNS) arithmetic as an alternative to the standard floating-point appears to be an attractive and suitable solution. The project will build on an existing cooperation between two partners, one from an EU member country and one from an Associate Candidate Country. The project will provide the young researcher from the prospective country with the opportunity to work within the advanced research group preparing him for work in unified Europe. Thus, the collaboration in this project will provide a step forward towards the integration of the prospective members to the European Community.
