Objetivo The research project is aimed at addressing the damaging shortfall of physical scientists trained in the area of Chemical Biology. Training leading to the award of a PhD degree will be provided within the framework of the Biophysical and Biological Chemistry (BBC) section of the Chemistry department of Imperial College London. The research environment of the BBC section is multi-facetted and heavily collaborative, both nationally and internationally. The BBC section has been successful in launching, in 2000, a one year Masters in Research Course in Bimolecular Science in which students from the physical sciences are trained to pursue multi-disciplinary research on biological and medical problems. Run in conjunction with the Department of Biological Sciences, the success of this course demonstrates very clearly the ability of the BBC section to train physical scientists in Chemical Biology. Challenging three-year research projects will be provided that will investigate and tackle important biological problems at the molecular level. All projects will be multidisciplinary in nature and carried out in association with one or more leading research groups. The projects will be designed to expose the early stage researcher to both the 'culture' and the main experimental tools of the molecular biosciences, but within a chemistry context. The intensive project based training will be underpinned by a diverse range of doctoral-level lecture courses equipping each Fellow with valuable transferable skills of relevance to their future career.
