Objective Genomic research promises important advancement in disease classification and treatment as well as in developing new drug therapies. In the 6FP, the EU identified the genomic research as strategic field in Life Sciences and one of the priorities to improve human health. Bioinformatics is intrinsically linked to the development of advanced genomic. In the 6FP the bioinformatic is also indicated as a strategicarea of development for the EU. Unfortunately, bioinformatic skills are not sufficiently diffused in EU. The objective of this project is to train an experienced researcher of the Host Organization staff with strong molecular biology and genetic background to develop bioinformatic skills in functional genomic areas. The researcher will spent 12 months at the Partner Institution that has an international reputationand solid experience in bioinformatic and functional genomic fields. This researcher will be, then, reintegrated in the Host Organization. Simultaneously, following an international call of vacan cy, an experienced computer scientist will be hired by the Host Organization for 18 months. These two researchers will transfer knowledge to the Host Organization to extend its potential in functional genomic research. The major objective of this project i s to let the Host Organization to acquire strong bioinformatic skills so that a fully functioning "Core Facility" for gene-array and functional genomic can be established. Through the activities of the "Core Facility" all the know-how developed in bioinfor matics and functional genomic will be transfer to other researchers of the team directly involved in this project aswell as to other research groups of the Host Institution. Moreover, being the Host Institution a University, the know-how will be also trans ferred to a number of young scientists and PhD students. The "Core facility" will also serve to run studies in collaboration with other research institution (i.e. others universities, SME).
