GRID computer station for handling and analysing compact muon solenoid data at RIPNP, Budapest

Objetivo

The KFKI Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics (RIPNP) is developing a local GRID computer system. In order to use this to store, handle, and analyse data to be collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collide r (LHC) of CERN we need expert training. This interdisciplinary project requests support (1) for inviting four experienced and more experienced scientists for 6 months each to train RIPNP staff how to set up and develop our GRID station and how to receive, store and handle LHC data, and (2) for sending two more experienced RIPNP scientists to CERN to get knowledge of analysing CMS data using GRID. This transfer of knowledge will enable us to: (1) increase our infrastructure with a powerful and efficient GRI D station; (2) make our research facility more competitive both inside Hungary and internationally, in the European Research Area; (3) participate in the CMS Collaboration in an efficient and useful way; (4) help CERN in its task to store and analyse LHC d ata from 2007 on; and (5) help RIPNP to disseminate this knowledge in Hungary. RIPNP will use this knowledge long after the end of the project, as LHC is planned to work for 15 years. This knowledge will be properly disseminated to young researchers and gr aduate students to be involved in using the GRID station, and also to undergraduate students at the University of Debrecen.
