Calculational tools and methods for physics at large hadron collider

Objective

For the purpose of studying the most fundamental structure of matter and space-time, the European community has invested several billions of euro into the LHC collider located at European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. Thanks to this a nd previous experiments, CERN plays key role in European Particle Physics, winning the competition with US. In order to fully exploit the LHC experiment appropriate precise theoretical calculations derived from Quantum Field Theory are necessary. Our group from H. Niewodniczanski Institute of Nuclear Physics, forming the key scientific staff of the project, has expertise in this class of calculations, involving Monte Carlo simulation techniques, which we have done for the previous CERN experiments, LEP1 and LEP2, in the electroweak sector of particle physics. In this proposal we plan to develop similar Monte Carlo tools and perform calculations for the LHC experiments. This requires extension of our expertise to the QCD sector of the Standard Model. Transfer of knowledge from CERN, which we choose as the partner institutions, is mandatory for successful accomplishment of this project. The existing calculational tools for hadron colliders are, generally, restricted to precision of order of 10%, whereas forthco ming LHC experiments require precision 1%. The goal of the proposal is to provide such precise predictions, mostly in a form of Monte Carlo simulations, for the realistic observables in the true experimental environment employing advanced methods of the so ftware engineering. The topics include: the Drell-Yan-type processes (inclusion of one-loop corrections and better quality parton showers), new methods of simulating spin effects in decays, extension of Drell-Yan-like results to other two body final states (WW, gZ, tt ), continuation of the development of Monte Carlo generators for the Higgs-boson searches, development of new general purpose Monte Carlo methods and algorithms.
