Switchable chromophores for nonlinear optics

Objective

The project deals with the investigation and design of chromophore systems for application in nonlinear optics which can be optically switched between two or more different states of activity. Selective switching as well as tuning the nonlinear optical act ivity will be made possible by well-defined structural modifications of the chromophore molecules. The effect of immobilisation at metal surfaces on the molecular response properties will be studied. To achieve these goals, time-dependent density functiona l theory will be employed in combination with standard and novel exchange-correlation potentials showing improved accuracy for the properties of interest. The proposal describes theoretical research in molecular chromophore design that will be of interest also to adjacent scientific disciplines such as applied physics, nanotechnology, and materials science. Following an initial mobility period, the project is part of a research programme that will help the researcher to qualify for a lasting scientific care er as university teacher and researcher in the country of nationality, thereby strengthening the European research area.
