Cel Our research topic is placed within the theory of formal languages, specifically we center our attention on three modular architectures defined within that field in the last years: membrane systems, colonies and eco-grammar systems. We intend to show tha t those three modular architectures can be very useful in the fields of natural languages and artificial intelligence The main research objective of the proposal we present here may be said to be the demonstration that modular architectures developed in the last years within field of formal languages may be of great utility in the description of natural languages and in the field of artificial intelligence. The overall goal of the project is to offer simple theories for describing natural languages in o rder to make easier their manipulation and their implementation in natural language processing systems. Specifically, what we intend to do is the following: 1. We want to show that membrane systems may reveal as a useful tool for the description of diffe rent levels of natural languages. We would like to apply membrane systems to the description of natural languages in order to develop something that may be called biological linguistics. 2. We intend to use colonies in order to generate natural language s and reconcile two apparent different conceptions in present-day linguistics â¿¿the one that regards natural languages as infinite objects, and the one that regards them as finite objects. 3. And finally, we want to use eco-grammar systems in the field of human-computer interfaces in natural languages. We intend to show that it is possible to use a modular formal-language-theoretic tool to model conversation and that such a formal device may be useful for the designing of effective and pleasants compu ter dialogue systems.
